-Lesson 1: The Safari Adventure-

Unit Description/Expedition: Within the first lesson, we touched upon the topic of this semester’s unit, Nature and Art, through the exploration of new media (scratch-board) and pattern.

Through the lens of an adventurer, students will explore the classroom and collect a two- and three- dimensional animal that they are interested in. With these animals, they will use observation skills and give an attribute of their two-dimensional animal. We will lead this short discussion, and then they will move back to their tables to draw, using scratch-board, an animal of their own. This animal can be real or fictitious, and can draw upon their two- or three-dimensional, collected animals if they wish. After they are done with their scratch-board, we will move to the expedition area, and Nanette will show examples of her own art and the stories behind them. We will introduce their sketchbooks, have the students write their names on the front cover, and start illustrating their favorite place.

Enduring Understanding: Personal communication is  demonstrated through the expression art. Artistic intention can be achieved through the use of media.

Inquiry/Learning Target: Students will observe and critique, leading to self-expression in their sketchbook. Teachers will guide them with questions to prompt them in thinking about and discussing what is art and how they see art themselves.

Key Concept(s): Media, observation

Skills: Students will observe their found animal and discuss attributes and differences; Students will draw an animal (real/fictitious) using scratch-board.

Art Focus: Exploration of scratch-board and observing characteristics of their animals.

Literary focus: Vocabulary: pattern, line, color, size; discussion of observations the students have made.
